Ajax autumn yard cleanup: keep leaf bags and branch bundles separate

Durham collects Ajax yard waste from April to early December. Use paper bags or labelled reusable open-top containers, up to 20 kg each. Tie branches in bundles at most 1 m long and 76 cm wide, with no branch thicker than 10 cm.

The branch pile is where advice often conflicts

Measure the branch bundle before tying the last knot. Durham’s current Ajax yard-waste rules set limits for its length, width and branch thickness, while leaves need the right bags or containers. Sorting the pile at home is much easier than moving an uncollected wet load back from the curb.

A June 2026 Durham thread asked whether a larger branch pile would be collected. Replies disagreed about volume limits and remembered different dimensions. One cited the waste app. Others suggested paid disposal or a contractor for material too large to bundle.

This is useful autumn planning, but the thread is not the current collection standard. An older Regional PDF also has a three-bundle limit, so it should not be silently combined with a newer commenter’s no-limit claim.

Check the address before the calendar fills up

Ajax links residents to Durham Region for the collection calendar. Do not use a nearby municipality’s week or an old annual guide. The final autumn pickup is important when leaves keep falling after you have made the first pile.

Use paper bags or clearly labelled reusable open-top containers. Cardboard boxes, blue boxes, green bins and plastic bags are not accepted for yard waste. Drill drainage holes in a reusable container. Pumpkins, gourds, fallen fruit and decorative corn stalks are accepted autumn material.

Choose paid removal only for a real need

A larger branch is not always a reason to pay someone to take every leaf. Compare what the curbside service accepts with the material you have, then get a quote for the remainder. Ask whether loading, disposal and cleanup are included.

Do not leave loose material across the sidewalk while deciding. A tidy collection pile should still leave people a usable route.

Sort first so you only carry the material once

Autumn cleanup is easier when leaves, acceptable branch bundles and excluded material become separate jobs. The older local yard-waste discussion shows why people get confused: neighbours remember different limits, services and seasonal dates. Durham’s current instructions are the source for the collection at an Ajax address. An old rule from another municipality can leave a neat-looking pile uncollected.

For leaves, use paper bags or a labelled open reusable container within the 20-kilogram limit. Plastic bags, blue or green bins and cardboard boxes are not the listed containers for this stream. Wet leaves become heavy quickly, so fill with the weight limit in mind rather than pressing each bag as tightly as possible. The Region does not recommend drilling drainage holes into the returnable container.

Branches have their own measurements: bundles no more than one metre long and 76 centimetres wide, with individual branches no more than ten centimetres across. Measure the awkward pieces before tying the whole pile. A branch that is too large does not become eligible because several smaller branches are tied around it. Larger work may need a separate disposal plan or a properly scoped paid removal quote.

The pumpkin belongs in a different pile from the plastic pot

The accepted seasonal list includes pumpkins, gourds, fallen fruit and corn stalks. It excludes grass, hay, plastic pots, sod, soil and stones. That makes sorting useful after decorating or clearing planters: remove the plastic and soil rather than treating the whole display as one piece of yard waste. The container and the contents both need to match the rules.

Collection normally runs from April into early December, but the exact final date depends on the address calendar. Put that date beside any planned pruning or cleanup day. If an eligible set-out is missed, Durham asks residents to wait until 7 p.m. before reporting it. A fall walk can wait for a pleasant afternoon; the last collection cannot be guessed from when another street puts bags out.

The November 2021 reusable-container conversation adds a practical choice. One person preferred a labelled open bin, while another pointed out how much storage a household would need for dozens of bins during peak leaf weeks. The April 2023 branch discussion favoured curbside bundles over paying to haul everything away. Keep those tradeoffs, but use today’s official measurements and container guidance rather than the old drilling suggestion or an unverified drop-off claim.
